The best markets to explore in Adelaide

Adelaide does markets differently: unhurried, produce-led, and best started before nine.

The Good Find

Go early, and go produce first

Adelaide markets run on a different clock to the rest of the country. The serious produce is gone by nine, the coffee queue is longest at ten, and the best conversations happen between the two.

Start with whatever is in season. South Australian growers are good at telling you what is at its peak, and they will not sell you something they would not take home.

If a stall has one thing and a lot of it, buy the thing.

Then go sideways

Once the bags are full, work the edges of the market away from the main aisle. That is where the secondhand book stalls, the tool tables and the people selling preserves made in a home kitchen tend to sit.

Make a morning of it

Adelaide markets reward wandering rather than efficiency. Park a few streets away, walk in, and leave the car where it is while you find breakfast nearby. You will spend less and see more.
